Purplish tongue:  purplish tongue generally stems from stagnation of blood.  It can be caused by both cold and heat.  Dark purplish tongue indicates extreme heat which reduces fluid, resulting stagnation of Qi and blood.  Pale and purplish tongue indicates blood stasis due to cold, whilst greenish purple tongue means insufficient Yang Qi leading to cold.
